Resumo
As civilizações sempre demonstraram zelo e reverência ao dispor dos mortos. Entre os orientais, a cremação tem sido a prática predominante. Nas culturas judaica e cristã, o sepultamento tem sido o mais comum, mas nas últimas décadas a cremação se tornou uma prática dominante em muitos países ocidentais. A popularização dos crematórios no Ocidente levanta a importante questão se a Bíblia oferece prescrição sobre cremar ou sepultar os mortos. Este artigo reflete sobre o sepultamento e a cremação, sua ocorrência na história, suas taxas atuais e o que a Bíblia tem a dizer sobre isso. Os relatos bíblicos sobre sepultamento, punição por fogo e cremação são abordados do ponto teológico, com a finalidade de compreender a natureza do relato se prescritivo ou não. O essencial na discussão sobre a questão é destacar a esperança bíblica da restauração de todas as coisas em Cristo, incluindo a ressurreição dos seres humanos para a vida imortal ou para o juízo.
