Tobacco causes more than 8 million deaths a year worldwide. Nicotine is the active ingredient in tobacco. Although its harmful effects have been identified and constantly warned, including by the Adventist Church for over 170 years, even today thousands of people still have this deadly addiction. Mitochondria are essential organelles not only for energy production, but also for processes of apoptosis, autophagy, redox signaling, immune response and metabolite delivery. Mitochondrial homeostasis depends on a balance in mitochondrial dynamics (fusion and fission). Studies have shown that mitochondrial functions and morphological changes depend on a viable circadian clock. Changes in this molecular clock alter mitochondrial function. The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of nicotine exposure on the circadian cycle and mitochondrial dynamics, which can lead to relevant metabolic changes. Alterations in mitochondrial morphology have been implicated in several physiological and pathological processes, such as neurodegenerative diseases and cancer.
