Abstract

There are three basic ideas about the the text of the Pentateuch: (1) Moses wrote
everything in it (including chapter 34 of Deuteronomy, which deals with his death), (2) Moses did not write anything. The text of the Pentateuch is the result of compiling carried out "by Ezra and his assistants in Babylon, making use of a heterogeneous collection of written material, originated from the pre-exilic period." Gunkel, in turn, assumed "that the books of Moses arrived in written form only at the time of the Exile", and (3) the Pentateuch is Mosaic authorship, but some lines
are insertions scribes, to help the reader understand better the text.
