“Making disciples”: a study based on Matthew 28:18-20

This article addresses mission and discipleship based on the Great Evangelical Commission given by Jesus to the disciples, as recorded in Matthew 28:18-20. This study is the result of bibliographical research and a brief exegetical analysis of the referenced biblical text. In addition to mentioning what different theologians and missiologists have written on the subject, we sought to define the terms “mission” and “discipleship”, applying them to the context of the local church, with an emphasis on the command to “make disciples”. The research demonstrates that mission can be accomplished through discipleship. Finally, the article highlights that the task of discipling people is part of the divine mandate entrusted to church members.
