Abstract

Luke 22: 43-44 brings great textual difficulties to the considerations about The Passion of Christ. This happens because this text cannot be found in the best manuscripts containing the story of Gethsemane as it is told in the book of Luke. Thus, to consider this issue, this article objectifies to analyze some comments of the Fathers of Church from the second century and some suggestions of scribes about changes on the writing so that the history of the text can be understood. At last, we conclude that this text was a lawful interpolation occasioned by theological needs. However, due to the important tradition based on the event described in the text and how old it is, the story should be taken as real. Keywords: Luke 22:43-44;
