Midia, family and Religion: An analysis of the Influence of the Television in a Child Religious Development
Keywords:
television, religion, development of a child.Abstract
The goal of this study is to understand what kind of influence the television has in the religious development of a child. This research starts with two basic presuppositions: (1) the television affects the development of a child. It this happens in relation to the establishment of habits, behavior, values and the way the child understand the world; (2) the television is an agent of socialization at the same level that the family, school, society and religion. In the methodological procedure, this research performed a bibliographic enquire in the educational field, more specifically in the subject of the psychological and social development of a child, and in the anthropological area concerning the role of communication and religion. Questionnaires were applied to nine children between nine and eleven years old, with objective and subjective questions. The research was performed with students of the Elementary School at Colégio Unasp, Engenheiro Coelho (SP). Our conclusion is that the television becomes an agent of socialization when the other agents fail to perform their duties. This failure is due, mainly, the lack of engagement by the family in a child education and development. Thus the television takes over the role that should be performed by the family, namely that o mediator between the child and society, between the child and the school, and the child and religion. This mediation takes place through the affirmation or the questioning of the values transmitted by the social institutions.Downloads
