The role of music in people’s decision for baptism in the Seventh-Day Adventist Church

Abstract

This study presents a panoramic view of the importance, influence and use of music in evangelism. It has the goal to demonstrate the role of music, in direct or indirect ways, in the process of conversion to Seventh-day Adventism in the states of Rio Grande do Sul, Paraná and São Paulo. The conclusion reached is that music is used by the Evangelist as a complement to his message. While the message preached works in the rational faculties of a person, music works in the emotional ones. This combined work leads the person to decision making for baptism. According to the field research, 55% of the people interviewed stated that music had some role in their conversion; from these, 26 % defined it as a direct influence, while 29% as an indirect influence.
