Context and focus of the special issue

The field of organizational communication has been historically driven by new theories and insights that seek to explain the dynamic between organizations and their stakeholders. However, the rush to describe the novelty of emerging technologies often comes at the expense of rigorous theory testing and study replication.

As noted in recent debates in management science, there is a risk of accumulating theoretical ideas about the impact of the digital environment that lack solid and time-validated empirical support.

The aim of this special issue is to advance the scientific understanding of organizational communication phenomena, investigating them in the context of emerging technologies and in light of established communication theories. We invite the academic community to evaluate competing theories, to empirically investigate foundational assumptions, and to constructively replicate baseline studies, now applied to the context of artificial intelligence, automation, big data, and digital platforms.

Topics of interest

We encourage submissions that primarily, but not exclusively, address the field of organizational communication in the context of emerging technologies, investigating their impacts, complexities, and consequences. The following are areas of interest for this special issue, without being limited to them, including studies that address theoretical perspectives as well as those that test, refine, and investigate empirical phenomena:

A

Technological adoption in internal and external organizational communication

The presence of AI, algorithms, software, and apps in corporate communication routines.

B

Digital identity, image, and reputation

Studies on digital reputation, algorithmic trust, and stakeholder engagement mediated by social robots/chatbots.

C

Impact of automation on crisis management

Strategies for addressing crises in scenarios generated by deepfakes, automated disinformation, and algorithmic virality dynamics.

D

Internal communication and Algorithmic Management

Studies on how the use of data-driven technologies for monitoring and decision-making affects organizational climate, culture, and communication flows between leadership and teams.

E

The role of AI in sensemaking

The impact of generative AI tools on corporate narratives and the perception of authenticity by stakeholders.

03

Evaluation criteria and methodological rigor

Works submitted for different sections will be accepted: articles, reviews, experience reports, technical production reports, and interviews, with preference for articles. Submitted papers will undergo a double-blind review process. Final acceptance is contingent on the review team's judgment of the paper's contributions across three key dimensions:

1

Contribution to theory refinement

Manuscripts should test well-grounded hypotheses and clearly explain how the study confirms, generalizes, limits, or refutes organizational communication theories.

2

Methodological rigor

The study design must be appropriate and robust, balancing internal and external validity. We are open to a variety of methodological approaches, as long as they are aligned with principles of transparency.

3

Implications for researchers

The study's findings should present clear implications for future research and for advancing knowledge in the field of organizational communication.

04

Ethical commitment

Crosspoint is guided by strict rigor and ethics in scientific publication. All manuscripts must strictly align with the ANPAD Code of Best Practices, which is an adaptation of the international guidelines from COPE -- Committee on Publication Ethics.

Authors must ensure originality, disclose potential conflicts of interest, guarantee transparency in data handling and reporting, and inform whether and how they used AI assistance.

Articles previously published in conference proceedings will be accepted, provided they contain at least 30% new textual material in the special issue version. In such cases, the adaptation must be noted in the "comments to the editor" field.
